0. Important note:

	If you want to install OSMD, it is recommended to read WHOLE 
	this short text (aspecially parts 4 and 5) before doing 
	anything. For copyright notes see the file COPYING (= GNU GPL).


1. What is OSMD?

	OSMD is the Olomouc SpareMiNT distribution. With this 
	distribution, every Atari Falcon/TT/clon user should be able to 
	install a clean MiNT environment. The multitasking will be as 
	perfect as possible, and after the installation everyone should 
	feel their Atari is just like a true Unix machine.

	It's generally assumed that the user has used Unix before. 
	Having used Unix before is of course and advantage with this 
	distribution as well, but not necessary.


2. Why OSMD?

	OSMD has been created because more and more users are interested 
	in SpareMINT (see http://sparemint.atari.org), but there was no 
	MiNT (see http://www.freemint.de/en) distribution suitable to be 
	used to install SpareMiNT without lot of extra expert work. OSMD 
	is called after a lovely historical town of Olomouc (see 
	http://www.olomouc.com) which is situated in the middle of 
	Moravia (the eastern country of the Czech Republic).

	OSMD issued from KGMD/KEMD. KEMD scripts and some KEMD texts 
	were taken and modified. Installation binaries (incl. those in 
	initrd.tgz) were replaced by new versions and the possibility of 
	handling Ext2 partitions was added.


3. What does OSMD offer?

 - Creates an Ext2 or a Minix partition.
 - Uncompresses rpm archive and creates the basic directory structure.
 - Installs the basic utilities from *.rpm SpareMiNT packages.
 - Installs chosen groups of other rpm packages.
 - Allows to install X11R6 server and basic X utilities.
 - Installs the relevant kernel and modules
 - Does the basic configuration:
	- Creates an account and set passwords.
	- Sets the timezone.
	- Configures network interface and services.
	- Prepares the internet connection via modem.


4. What do you need?

	It's always hard to answer this question. Theoretically, MiNT 
	should run on every Atari Falcon/TT/clon compatible 
	computer/emulator. Actually, to be able to work comfortably with 
	OSMD, the following configuration is necessary:

 - 4 MB RAM
 - a free partition with at least 64 MB on your hard drive
 - a medium (e. g. external harddisk or a CD-ROM) with the whole 
	SpareMiNT (or the relevant part you want to install).
	Absolutely necessary are:
	- rotfs+rpm-3.06.tgz
	- bash, info, mktemp, gawk, fileutils, textutils, sh-utils, rpm


5.  What to do before starting the installation?

 - We assume you have extracted the `osmdinst.zip' on a floppydisk or 
	in a harddisk directory (NOT on the partition which will be used 
	for the installation of the SpareMiNT).

 - Check the partition with uncompressed `osmdinst.zip' doesn't have 
	any file called something like *.XDD in the directory 
	`<drive>:\', `<drive>:\MINT\' or `<drive>:\MULTITOS\'! Otherwise 
	these drivers will be loaded while the installation and that 
	could be very annoying for the installation process.

 - If you have got a language mutation of the OSMD setup script which 
	was not part of the `osmdinst.zip', please check whether the 
	number versions of the script and the rest of the OSMD are 
	equal. If so copy it to the same directory (or on the 
	floppydisk) where you have extracted the `osmdinst.zip' and name 
	it `setup.xx' where `xx' must be replaced by two-letter ISO 639 
	language code of the script's language.

 - A big partition has to be free for the installation. This 
	partition must be a GEMDOS partition to work, so the letter of 
	the corresponding drive should be accessible on the desktop. In 
	addition it must be a `RAW' one, not `GEM' or `BGM'. IDs `LNX' 
	and `$83' for Ext2 and `MIX' for Minix are also allowed (but 
	they could be invisible for some disk drivers). While the 
	installation, this partition will be converted in an Ext2 or a 
	Minix partition, that means, "ALL THE DATA ON THIS PARTITION 
	WILL BE LOST"!!!

 - `rootfs+rpm-3.06.tgz' file must be reacheable on any medium 
	connecetd to the system. If there are only GEMDOS (no long 
	filenames) partitions it has to be named `rootfs+r.tgz'.

 - The individual packets of the distribution (SpareMiNT `*.rpm' 
	files) should be copied in any directory on the hard drive or 
	must be present on another medium (CD-ROM, zip etc.) which is 
	connected to the computer and its driver is installed. All the 
	basic SpareMiNT packages (bash, info, mktemp, gawk, fileutils, 
	textutils, sh-utils, rpm) must be in the same directory. PLEASE 
	write down the paths, they will be asked further in the 
	installation.

	There could be a problem, because SpareMiNT packages have long 
	filenames which are unreadable for TOS. So it is recommended to 	
	have them copied on an Ext2 or Minix partition or on a long 
	filename CD-ROM (e. g. a Rock Ridge one). In the second case you 
	will also need a CD-ROM driver with support for the long 
	filenames under MiNT. If so, please copy the MiNT driver (named 
	something like `*.xfs') on the installation floppydisk or into 
	the installation harddisk directory.

 - Start your computer again without any auto program or accessory. 
	Only the hard disk driver is necessary. A bootselector will be 
	helpfull. And if you have parts of OSMD or SpareMiNT on a CD-ROM 
	also the relevant CD-ROM driver should be run.

 - It is recommended to switch to a monochrome video mode to 
	accelerate the installation process. If there is a STABLE 
	acceleration HW in your computer you can also use it.

 - In the desktop, run OSMD.TOS from your boot floppydisk or from 
	your harddisk installation directory. This file was created 
	while the uncompress process of `osmdinst.zip'. A dynamic 
	Ramdisk is automatically created in which all the necessary 
	installation utilities and files will be copied. All the 
	installation is handled by the installation script, you only 
	have to answer a few questions.

 - First of the questions will be a selection of the installation 
	language. There are only a few languages available now. If you 
	have got a setup script in your language and copied it to the 
	installation directory (or floppydisk) you can choose it by 
	typing the two-letter extension of the relevant setup file.


6. What should you do after the installation?

	A lot of things to customize the system to your needs. We will 
	essay to add new functions to next versions of the distribution 
	to make this part as easy as possible.


7. Few things to consider.

	Firstly, few wrong ideas will be corrected. Even if it's hard to 
	accept them, they are simple.

 - The drive letters and the backslashes (\) in the pathnames are 
	absolutely taboo. You will only work on the drive U:

 - Adventurous contructions from DOS world, like i.e. *.* must be 
	wiped of your mind completely. Wildcards and regular expressions 
	follow rules not the phrase from outerspace. Note *.* fits 
	read.me but not readme.

 - For the end of lines we'll use LF instead of the Atari CRLF.

 - The character sets to be used are ISO-8859-1 and ISO-8859-2, the 
	virtual consoles are set like that. Coding it to some modified 
	IBM codepage that falls out from the sky is not to be desired.
     
 - In every case, the file compression will be a combination of `Tar' 
	and `Gzip', these are the only good and safe possibilities to 
	work with. In extreme cases, you can also use ZOO, but the other 
	packers (like STZIP or LHARC) are totally unusable.

 - Work under 'ROOT' only if it's absolutely necessary. Use `su' 
	instead logging as root. Thus, you'll be very safe.


8. Doing some modifications on the distribution:

 - To install your own programs on the Ext2/Minix, use the directory 
	/usr/local!

 - Only make changes on the installed files if you know EXACTLY what 
	you are doing. WRITE DOWN all the changes you are making.

 - Write the configuration file changes under /etc.

 - If you follow these rules, you will not have any problems 
	installing future versions. Do changes only in the /home
	and /usr/local and only if necessary. Few files under /etc and 
	/var need to be saved, thus it will allow you to become 
	accustomed for a future installation.

- Apache is unable to install on 14 MB Falcon.
- There is a problem with installing ghostscript and tetex.
